“As long as I visualize the change that needs to happen and take an active role, then I’m going to be O.K.”
“COFI has helped me change my entire life. Eight years ago, I was really in despair and reluctant at first to get involved. I sat back and just listened, but I could relate to the other women I met—their challenges and struggles.
At COFI training, I learned to visualize my goals and have a real plan to achieve them. I became part of a parent team and got support, and also reminders to stay on track. When I started, I was so overweight I needed a wheelchair. I lost 250 pounds. I learned more effective ways to communicate with my family and now use my skills to be a community leader.
I joined POWER-PAC, the organization that brings COFI parents together from all across Chicago. I was so impressed with the diversity. We are different from each other, but able to come together to create better opportunities for our children.
I don’t just sit back any more. Now I train other parents through COFI and lead our work to get our children the early education they need.
Working with COFI has given me a “nevertheless” attitude—even though I still face struggles in my life, nevertheless as long as I visualize the change that needs to happen and take an active role, then I’m going to be O.K.”
